African Aviation Insurance Pool Meeting
The African Oil & Energy Pool has evolved over the years into a viable capacity provider to the African energy market. Recent settlement of huge losses also attest to this fact. Even though there are a number of challenges to the growth of the Pool, however, Aggressive and informed marketing as well as prudent underwriting going forward would ensure that the pool remains in business providing much needed local capacity in the years ahead.
Premium rates in the Aviation industry have been falling each year by at least 20% and this has impacted adversely on the premium incomes of the African Aviation Pool in the last 5 years as evidenced in the table below. Thus for the same or higher levels of exposure, the premium charged is lower. The lower premiums coupled with the occasional crashes of African planes is causing serious turbulence in the Pool’s result. For instance, the underwriting loss of 2014 was occasioned by the 24th July Algerian Airline crash in Mali. Similarly, the 2016 Egyptian Airways crash in the Mediterranean on the 19th May will most likely throw the books of the Pool again into red.
